NOA raises alarm on Emerging Human Metapneumovirus, urges public awareness

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Akwa Ibom State, has launched a statewide sensitization initiative to raise awareness about Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a newly identified respiratory virus that has sparked health concerns across the region.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, the Director of NOA in the state, explained that HMPV exhibits symptoms similar to the flu and primarily affects vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

He highlighted common symptoms of the virus, including fever, cough, nasal congestion, sore throat, shortness of breath, and in severe cases, wheezing, pneumonia in children, and worsening asthma conditions in adults.

The agency has strongly recommended the use of face masks, particularly in crowded areas such as public markets, transportation hubs, and airports, as a key preventive measure to limit the virus’s spread. “We urge residents to wear nose masks, particularly in crowded areas, to protect themselves and others. The virus can be transmitted through respiratory droplets, making it essential to maintain hygiene and limit exposure,” said Mkpoutom.

In addition to mask-wearing, NOA has advised citizens to observe proper hand hygiene and avoid touching contaminated surfaces. Mkpoutom also reminded the public to maintain physical distance from individuals showing flu-like symptoms and to seek medical care if they suspect they have been infected with HMPV.

While no specific cure has been identified for the virus yet, Mkpoutom reiterated the importance of following the guidelines provided by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). He also encouraged residents to stay up-to-date on vaccinations for preventable respiratory illnesses, such as influenza and COVID-19.

The NOA’s ongoing awareness campaign aims to equip residents with the knowledge to protect themselves from this potentially harmful virus as it spreads across Akwa Ibom.
