TUNDE BOLAJI -MINNA.

Niger State Ministry of Primary Health Care, in collaboration with UNICEF and other key partners, conducted a one-day sensitization meeting on multiple micro-nutrient supplements in  Minna.

The event aimed to enhance awareness of the national policy on multiple Micro-Nutrient Supplement (MMS), particularly targeting children, women, and lactating mothers.

Dr. Abdullahi Usman, Imam Permanent Secretary, emphasized the importance of this initiative to address the nutritional needs of children in both urban and rural communities, ensuring they are not adversely affected by pregnancy-related deficiencies.

He highlighted that the training, organized in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Primary Health Care, is crucial for grassroots outreach. Nutrient distribution will occur at the community level through local health facilities.

Also in attendance, Hadiza M. Shirru Permanent Secretary of Women Affairs and Social Development, stressed the role of her ministry in promoting compliance and raising awareness among local government officials.

She encouraged leveraging women’s gatherings to inform vulnerable groups about the significance of MMS, particularly on designated awareness days.

Hajiya Asmau Abubakar Muhammed, the State Nutrition Officer, called for collaboration among all stakeholders, including public health directors, service providers, and academic professionals, to ensure widespread acceptance of the initiative.

She shared insights on the provision of 13-15 essential minerals to pregnant women, which is crucial for improving maternal and infant health outcomes.

Despite the country’s economic challenges, Hajiya Muhammed expressed optimism that with these supplements, women’s nutritional status will improve, positively impacting maternal and child mortality rates. She announced efforts by indigenous companies to produce these supplements, supported by the administration of  Governor Umar Mohammed Bago, and invited beneficiaries to access these free services tailored for pre-pregnancy, during pregnancy, and lactation periods.

This vital initiative demonstrates Niger State’s commitment to enhancing the health and nutrition of its communities.
