By Uzorigwe Gloria, Abakaliki.

The wife of Ebonyi state Governor and founder of BERWO, Chief Mrs. Mary-maudline Uzoamaka Ogbonna Nwifuru hosted the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ms. Gill Lever, in her office at the New Government House, Centenary City, Abakaliki, Ebonyi state.

The First Lady in her remark said, “It was a rare opportunity to demonstrate the gender equality and diversity of gender roles in the political dispensation of my darling husband, the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency Rt Hon BLDr Prince Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.

“The governor is remarkably a  ‘he for she’ and is running a women-friendly formula in the distribution of political appointments in the state. The inclusion of women in his governance has showcased the significance of women in nation-building and sustainability.  The deliberate inclusion of women in the political and administrative fabric has enhanced governance and fostered a culture of productivity, transparency, and accountability. This Ms Gill was quite impressed with.

“Ebonyi State offers immense opportunities for collaboration in areas such as agriculture, education, healthcare, and infrastructural development. Our government has classified these sectors as part of our agenda to improve the quality of life for our citizens. We are confident that this historic visit will open new doors for partnerships that will benefit both our state and the broader Nigerian-British relationship.

“My foundation, Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Internally Displaced Persons Foundation (BERWO), was established to address challenges facing our rural dwellers and pave the way forpaveinable solutions. Whether it is tackling poverty, promoting second-chance education, fostering healthcare access, or eradicating Gender-Based violence, our mandate is to leave no stone unturned in our pursuit of progress. And we are open to strengthening ties with international partners like the United Kingdom to enhance development, foster economic growth, and create opportunities for our people.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Ebonyi State, I wish to express our gratitude for the support and goodwill of the British High Commission. Your efforts in promoting trade, investment, and cultural exchange between our nations are deeply appreciated.

The meeting was attended by some of the female appointees,  female members of the House of Assembly, commissioners, female chairmen, and SA on adult education.

Ms. Lever also took a stroll through NORFIC to visit women being treated for Vesico Vaginal Fistula at the VVF National Centre. To round off her assignment in our state, the state government held a dinner in her honor, and she made a promise to visit us again.
