International Society of Diplomats holds Inaugural Assembly in Abuja, inducts, honors dignitaries

The International Society of Diplomats held its inaugural assembly on December 17, 2024, at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja, with the theme: “Diplomacy and International Cooperation: Pivotal to Sustainable Peace and Development.”  

The event, hosted by professional event manager and former beauty queen Gloria Agboti—Miss Nigeria 2018 and CEO of Queens Host Enterprise—featured live media coverage, interviews with dignitaries, awardees, and inductees.

The assembly commenced with the introduction of dignitaries and special guests, followed by a welcome address delivered by the Country Director/Head of Mission, Prof. Edet B. Ekpenyong.  

In his address, Prof. Ekpenyong observed protocol and expressed heartfelt gratitude to key Nigerian leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, as well as current and former governors, ministers, and members of parliament. He also acknowledged the presence of security chiefs, ambassadors, and members of the diplomatic corps, especially the Chairman of the occasion, H.E. Dr. Isa Yuguda.

Prof. Ekpenyong emphasized the theme of the event, describing diplomacy as a vital tool not only for resolving conflicts but also for fostering international cooperation, economic growth, and the promotion of human rights.

He stated, “As we embark on this historic journey, we recognize that diplomacy is a powerful instrument for fostering cooperation, promoting economic growth, and advancing human rights to achieve sustainable development.”

He further highlighted the critical role of diplomacy in bridging cultural divides, facilitating collaboration, and addressing global challenges in an increasingly interconnected world.

The International Society of Diplomats, he noted, is dedicated to promoting excellence in diplomacy, enhancing international cooperation, and fostering sustainable peace and development.  

Through collaborative efforts, Prof. Ekpenyong explained, the organization seeks to create a platform for diplomats, scholars, and practitioners to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and develop innovative solutions to global challenges. He urged participants to engage positively and explore new approaches to diplomacy and international cooperation.  

He also expressed gratitude to the Federal Government of Nigeria and various government agencies for their support and called for continued institutional collaboration to enable the organization to positively impact the citizenry.  

Special appreciation was extended to the event’s planning committee, led by Dr. Alexander Faranpoju, for their dedication to the success of the assembly.  

The keynote lecture, titled “Diplomacy and International Cooperation: Pivotal to Sustainable Peace and Development,” was presented by Associate Prof. Mathew Ogwuche of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Abuja, on behalf of the D.R. Congo Ambassador to the United Kingdom, H.E. Amb. Ndolamb Ngokwey.  

Key highlights of the lecture included:  

– The importance of understanding diplomacy and international cooperation.  

– The role of diplomacy in sustainable peace and development.  

– Current global crisis flashpoints threatening diplomacy and how international cooperation is the solution.

Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives of the Nigerian Air Force, the Inspector General of Police, and other dignitaries. The event concluded with the induction of new members, the presentation of awards, and the recognition of outstanding individuals for their contributions to diplomacy and peacebuilding.
