IPOB Protest Turns Bloody in Udi as Clashes Erupt with Police and Military

A peaceful protest organized by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Udi, Enugu State, turned violent on February 14th, 2024, following a clash with Nigerian police and military forces.
The protest, led by unarmed IPOB supporters, was held to demand the release of their members who were arrested in 2023 during the group’s annual Biafran Heroes Remembrance Day. Protesters chanted songs and held placards, calling on the government to free what they described as “innocent supporters.”
An eyewitness, who chose to remain anonymous for security reasons, told our reporter that police confronted the protesters and ordered them to disperse. However, the demonstrators stood their ground, insisting they were exercising their constitutional rights. According to the witness, security forces responded by firing tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowd. The situation quickly escalated into chaos.
Tragically, five IPOB supporters were reportedly killed after security personnel began shooting sporadically to scare the protesters.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Enugu State Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident, describing it as “an unfortunate situation.” He expressed regret over how the protest escalated into violence and assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted. DSP Ndukwe further stated that anyone found responsible for the killings and unrest would face the full weight of the law. He also mentioned that certain IPOB members — including Mr. Chidi Okeke, Mr. Emeka Oduma, Mr. Emma Okechi, and Mr. Chimezie Udeh — will be questioned in relation to the incident.
Meanwhile, the traditional ruler of Udi Ancient Kingdom, His Royal Highness Igwe Samuel Aneke (Okwuluoha IV), condemned the attack and called on both federal and state governments to stop the killing of innocent civilians. He decried the rising cases of extrajudicial killings and urged authorities to ensure justice is served in this case.
