Why EFCC invites ex-governor Al-Makura, wife

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited  former Governor of Nasarawa State and serving senator, Tanko Al-Makura, and his wife, Mairo, over alleged corruption.

A source at the commission disclosed this to Standard Times on Wednesday evening.

As of the time of filing this report, the couple were being grilled by operatives of the anti-graft agency at its headquarters in Abuja.

The source did not give details of the allegation against the ex-governor and his wife.

Spokesperson of EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren when contacted declined comment on the couple’s arrest.

Al-Makura was the Governor of Nasarawa State between 2011 and 2019 before he was elected as Senator representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District at the National Assembly

However, our Correspondent gathered  that about 55 accounts controlled by the couple and their companies were involved in the suspicious transactions, amounting to billions of naira, when Mr Al-Makura was the governor of Nasarawa State between 2011 and 2019.

In one of the accounts, less than $250 was lodged there in the two years preceding his assumption of office, sources said, adding that soon after he became governor, huge deposits started flowing in an apparently structured pattern.

Many deposits into this particular domiciliary account and others were made by businesses alleged to have carried out contracts for the state government.

However, a source close to Al-Makura linked his predicament to his APC Chairmanship ambition.

“The hawks in APC are after Al-Makura because of his APC Chairmanship ambition but I want to assure you that he will come out clean and victorious” the source who pleaded anonymity told Standard Times
