LAGOS, NIGERIA — Nearly 2 months after the historic EndSARS protests, dozens of participants remain in detention, while others have fled their homes in fear of persecution.
Information gathered by our correspondent reveals that more than 50 youths are currently held in Lagos State prisons over their alleged roles in the peaceful demonstrations against police brutality. Similar reports have emerged from several other states across the country.
A source in Lagos, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that many young people have gone into hiding, with some relocating to undisclosed locations. The source named several individuals, including Mr. Olomodu, Mr. Ayo Ikwo, Mr. Sheun Adesuyi, and Mr. Aderemi Abioye, as among those reportedly being targeted by the police for their participation in the protests.
Human rights organisation Amnesty International has urged the Federal Government to halt what it describes as a “campaign of revenge” against citizens who exercised their constitutional right to peaceful assembly. The group called for the immediate release of all detainees connected to the EndSARS protests.
