The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a young man suspected of setting fire to his elder brother’s room, killing him and leaving his wife with severe burns in Nassarawa village, Gwaram Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adamu, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists, saying the incident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on September 29, 2026.
According to the police, the suspect, identified as Abbas Ibrahim, allegedly gained access to the residence of his brother, Basiru Shuaibu, poured petrol into the room where Basiru and his wife were sleeping, and set it ablaze.
The fire left Basiru and his wife with serious burns. Basiru later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment.
The police said the suspect had claimed that he was not mentally sound.
Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, said the suspect had been charged before a court to face legal proceedings.
He assured residents that the command would continue to take decisive measures against criminal activities and ensure that those suspected of violating the law are brought before the appropriate authorities.
