Nigerian stand-up comedian and Nollywood actor, Bovi Ugboma, has opened up about the period when many comedians were coming up together and regularly performing on the same shows.

According to him, comedians such as Seyi Law, I Go Die, I Go Save, Okey Bakassi and others spent a lot of time together through shows like Night of a Thousand Laughs and the Glo Comedy Tour.

Speaking in a recent interview, Bovi said, “All comedians used to be on ‘Night of a Thousand Laughs’ or ‘Glo Comedy Tour’ round the nation.

“We used to spend time together; you will see Seyi Law, I go die, I go save, Okey Bakassi, we were one big family, until Basketmouth did ‘Basketmouth Uncensored ’ so we started discovering our individual strengths”.

Bovi also said Basketmouth’s Uncensored helped change the way comedians looked at their careers.

Rather than everyone continuing to work mainly as part of the same comedy circuit, comedians began to see the value in building their own identity, style and audience.

Bright Okpocha, aka Basketmouth had shown that a comedian could put his own name on a major show and make the show itself part of his brand.

This change by him gave others room to think about what they could do individually.

Recall that Basketmouth’s major emergence in Lagos comedy began in the year 2000 when he performed at a concert called “Hanging out with the Home Boys.”
