Political Thugs Allegedly Attempt to Kill Radio Host After Anti-Corruption Broadcasts

A human rights activist and radio programme host, Mr. Izekor Goodluck Ogieva, narrowly escaped death after he was allegedly attacked by suspected political thugs in what appears to be a coordinated assassination attempt linked to his outspoken criticism of corrupt politicians.

According to the police report, Ogieva, a resident of Iyokho Street, off Nomayo, Upper Sakponba Road, Benin City, reported at the Benin police division on January 21, 2023, with severe injuries, including a badly swollen face, following two separate attacks on the same day by 15 political thugs.

The activist alleged that the first attack occurred at his residence when three men, posing as visitors, gained access to the premises and attempted to reach him. However, he reportedly escaped through a rear exit before the assailants could carry out their mission.

Hours later, Ogieva said he was ambushed again along the Benin-Sapele Road by about 12 suspected thugs who descended on him while he was in a Toyota Yaris vehicle. He alleged that the attackers beat him with sticks and other dangerous objects, inflicting multiple injuries.

The victim further claimed that the attackers attempted to set him ablaze, but their plan was foiled after passersby and nearby residents intervened, enabling him to escape and seek refuge at a police station.

Police records indicate that Ogieva told investigators he could identify some of the attackers if presented with them.

Preliminary investigations reportedly linked the attacks to a political radio programme hosted by Ogieva during the 2023 general election campaign period. The programme was said to focus on exposing corruption and criticizing politicians seeking public office.

According to the report, Ogieva had publicly mentioned the names of some influential political figures during the broadcasts, a move that allegedly angered certain individuals who subsequently threatened his life and demanded that he discontinue the programme or begin speaking favourably about them on air.

Investigators further revealed that the activist had allegedly survived two assassination attempts since the controversy surrounding the radio programme began, raising concerns over his safety and the risks faced by whistleblowers and media commentators.

Police administered first aid treatment to Ogieva at the Police Cottage Hospital and commenced an investigation into the matter.

Authorities advised the activist to remain vigilant while efforts continue to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the alleged attacks.
