Residents and students in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, have expressed concern following the circulation of a notice announcing plans for an Oro traditional rite in Idode Quarters on Thursday, May 14, 2026.
The notice, reportedly addressed to the Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye, indicated that the rite would commence at 10:00 p.m. on Thursday and conclude by 4:00 a.m. on Friday.
According to the letter, the exercise forms part of the burial ceremonies for a late traditional title holder identified as the “Lewu of Idode.” The notice was also said to have been copied to security agencies as well as the student affairs departments of major higher institutions within the town.
The announcement has generated discussions among residents, especially students, regarding safety and movement during the period scheduled for the traditional exercise.
Oro rites remain a longstanding aspect of Yoruba cultural practice and are usually accompanied by temporary restrictions on movement within affected areas.
While organisers of the rite appealed for understanding and cooperation from the public, some residents urged authorities and community leaders to intensify public awareness efforts to prevent panic and maintain order throughout the exercise.
