Woman Flees After her Alleged LGBTQ Involvement Sparks Violence, Family Crisis in Anambra

Tension has gripped parts of Anambra State following the alleged exposure of Mrs. Chukwuma Anita Iwugo-Godwin, whose private life reportedly became public after a fallout with a close associate, triggering a chain of violent reprisals and threats from within her community and extended family.

The controversy reportedly began when a woman identified as Ifeoma Eze allegedly disclosed sensitive details about Iwugo-Godwin’s involvement in same sex activity after a misunderstanding between both parties. The disclosure, according to family sources, quickly spread within religious and local vigilante circles, escalating into a wider community backlash.

Narrating the ordeal, Mrs. Mouneke Calista, who identified herself as the victim’s sister, said the situation spiraled out of control within days of the alleged exposure.
“My sister’s life has been turned upside down. What started as a private issue became a public attack on her dignity and safety,” she said.

Calista explained that following the incident, members of her sister’s husband’s family allegedly began issuing threats, accusing her of bringing shame to the household and demanding that she undergo traditional rites as a form of “cleansing.”

According to her, the demands included being taken to a shrine for oath-taking, an act the victim reportedly opposed due to her Christian faith and fears for her life.
“They insisted she must be taken to a shrine and subjected to rituals. She refused because she believes it could cost her life,” Calista added.

The situation reportedly escalated in December 2023 when Iwugo-Godwin travelled to her hometown for the Christmas holidays. During the visit, she was allegedly attacked, sustaining severe injuries.
“My sister was attacked with a corrosive substance on her leg and stabbed in the face. Her daughter, who tried to defend her, was also injured,” Calista recounted.

Both mother and child were said to have been rushed to a hospital for urgent medical treatment following the incident.

Despite the violence, pressure allegedly continued to mount. In February 2024, the family claimed she received fresh threats of being forcibly taken to a shrine known locally as Okija, where she would be compelled to undergo ritual cleansing.

Calista further disclosed that the victim’s husband has also faced backlash, including alleged ostracism by his kinsmen for refusing to abandon his wife.
“Her husband has stood by her, but he has been told he cannot return to the village unless he divorces her or submits her for the ritual,” she said.

The family now fears for their collective safety, claiming that refusal to comply with the demands could lead to further violence or even death. They also expressed concern about seeking help, citing fear of stigma, legal complications, and community bias.

“This is no longer just about allegations or exposure. It has become a matter of survival for her and her children,” Calista stressed.

As of the time of filing this report, the whereabouts of Iwugo-Godwin remain unknown, with sources indicating that she may have gone into hiding to avoid further attacks.

Efforts to reach local authorities for official comment were unsuccessful, but the incident has once again raised concerns about mob justice, cultural coercion, and the limits of personal safety in deeply sensitive social disputes.
