Ritual Demand Sparks Family Crisis as Woman Goes into Hiding After Sister-in-Law’s Death

A family dispute rooted in tradition, religion, and alleged moral transgression has escalated into a full-blown crisis, forcing a married woman into hiding after a tragic chain of events in Benin City.

The husband, Mr. Ferguson, who spoke to journalists, traced the ordeal back to April 2023 when he travelled with his wife, Mrs. Ferguson-Amazi Josephine Amenawon, and their children to his family home in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area for Easter celebrations. What was meant to be a festive reunion, however, quickly turned into a moment of shock that would alter the course of their lives.

According to his account, during the family gathering, his wife and his elder sister, Blessing Ikponmwen, were allegedly discovered in an intimate act inside one of the rooms in the family house. The discovery was reportedly made by his uncle, a respected custodian of the family’s ancestral shrine, who immediately raised an alarm, describing the act as a grave abomination.

The incident triggered chaos within the household, as family members rushed to the scene. In the confusion that followed, both women attempted to flee, but Blessing was apprehended. She was allegedly beaten, while Mrs. Ferguson managed to escape the premises and returned to Lagos.

Family sources disclosed that following the incident, Blessing was handed over to the family’s traditional authorities for further rites after she was discharged from hospital. She took the oath and rituals administered as part of the family’s traditional response to the abomination incident.

In the aftermath, the elders of the family reportedly demanded that it remains Mrs. Ferguson to undergo a cleansing ritual to atone for what they described as a serious cultural and spiritual offence. Blessing has completed her part of the ritual before she later died 10 days after the ritual and the responsibility shifted entirely to Mrs. Ferguson, whom the family insisted must return to Benin City to complete her ritual process.

Mr. Ferguson explained that the pressure from his family placed him in a difficult position, as family member ambush and beat him on June 2024 and was instructed to produce his wife or face severe consequences, including possible banishment.

Despite the controversy, he stated that he had forgiven his wife after she reached out to him in remorse and expressed willingness to comply with the family’s demands.

According to him, his wife initially agreed to return to Benin City for the ritual after several discussions. Plans were reportedly underway for the trip when news emerged about the circumstances surrounding Blessing’s death, particularly claims that it occurred after she underwent the same traditional oath demanded by the family.

The development reportedly caused fear and panic, leading Mrs. Ferguson reconsidered her decision. Concerned for her safety, she withdrew from the arrangement and went into hiding, halting all plans to return to the family home.

The situation has since escalated, with Mr. Ferguson alleging that some members of his family have issued threats against him after several beating on many occasions and promised him it will continue like that untill he present his wife for the ritual. The unfolding crisis highlights the tension between traditional practices, personal safety, and legal implications, leaving the family deeply divided and the future uncertain.
