Global football body FIFA has sanctioned both Nigeria Football Federation and the Congolese Association Football Federation over disciplinary incidents during the heated 2026 FIFA World Cup African Play‑Off final.
The controversial match saw DR Congo national football team defeat the Nigeria national football team 4-3 on penalties in Morocco on November 16, 2025.
According to FIFA’s disciplinary overview, both federations were found guilty of separate offences related to supporter conduct during the encounter.
Nigeria was punished for failing to maintain order and security after spectators reportedly threw objects onto the pitch.
The offence falls under Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, attracting a fine of 1,000 Swiss francs.
Meanwhile, the Congolese federation received a heavier sanction.
FIFA said some supporters used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the match, violating Article 17.2.d of the disciplinary code.
The offence earned DR Congo a fine of 5,000 Swiss francs.
The encounter has remained controversial since DR Congo eliminated Nigeria from the qualification race.
Nigeria’s coach Eric Chelle sparked further debate after the game when he accused Congolese officials of using voodoo during the clash.
The sanctions come as attention turns to FIFA’s pending ruling on a protest filed by the NFF over the alleged use of ineligible players by DR Congo.
Nigeria submitted the petition on December 15, 2025, asking FIFA to investigate the nationality switches of several overseas-born players.
Among those listed were Lionel Mpasi, Aaron Wan‑Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe, Arthur Masuaku, and Cédric Bakambu.
Although DR Congo continues preparations for the intercontinental play-offs, the team has already dropped two disputed players, Michel‑Ange Balikwisha and Mario Stroeykens, from its latest 26-man squad.
