President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday officially inaugurated Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of State for Finance during a brief ceremony held at the State House in Abuja.
The appointment followed Oyedele’s confirmation by the Nigerian Senate last week after lawmakers approved his nomination through a voice vote during plenary. The confirmation was announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio after the Committee of the Whole cleared the nominee.
President Tinubu had earlier nominated Oyedele for the position to replace former Minister of State for Finance Doris Uzoka-Anite.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development in a statement made available to journalists.
Prior to his ministerial appointment, Oyedele, who hails from Ikaram in Akoko area of Ondo State, served as chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he played a significant role in the review of Nigeria’s tax system.
The 50-year-old economist and public policy expert began his academic journey at Yaba College of Technology, where he obtained a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Finance. He later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.
He also participated in executive education programmes at London School of Economics, Yale University, Gordon Institute of Business Science, and the Harvard Kennedy School.
Before joining the federal cabinet, Oyedele spent 22 years with PwC, where he joined in 2001 and rose to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader.
In addition to his professional career, he serves as a professor at Babcock University in Ogun State and is also a visiting scholar at the Lagos Business School.
