The Sokoto State Government has announced plans to revive historical sites across the state to boost tourism and enhance revenue generation.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu made this announcement during the commissioning of the remodeled Zawiyatu Sheikh Aliyu Bunza on Friday, highlighting the state’s rich history and potential for tourism growth.
The decision was informed by Sokoto’s status as the seat of the Caliphate, which is home to numerous historical monuments and artifacts, many predating the jihad period, that must be preserved for posterity.
According to Governor Aliyu, the revival and improvement of these historical sites will preserve the rich history of the Caliphate and its founders, while providing a conducive environment for tourists, scholars, and researchers.
Abubakar Bawa said the Governor also stated that the state intends to engage the Federal Government for stronger collaboration on how best to improve and develop these historical monuments, ensuring their protection and preservation.
Governor Aliyu directed all relevant stakeholders in charge of historical sites to begin preparations and produce a comprehensive blueprint for their revival and development, paving the way for potential tourism growth.
Present-day Sokoto hosts several important historical sites, including Hubbaren Shehu, Hubbaren Muhammadu Fodiyo in Degel, Tabkin Kwato, Alkalawa, and Surame, among others, which could become major tourist destinations and revenue generators.
