Bribery bombshell rocks Oyo Assembly as Majority Leader faces ethics probe

The Oyo State House of Assembly has been thrown into fresh controversy following allegations of financial inducement levelled against the Majority Leader, Sanjo Adedoyin, triggering an ethics investigation that has exposed deepening cracks within the legislature.

The allegation was formally raised against Adedoyin by a fellow lawmaker, Ibrahim Shittu, setting the stage for a tense showdown on the floor of the House.

Adedoyin, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), represents Ogbomoso South, while Shittu, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), represents Saki West.

The House Committee on Ethics and Privileges was directed to take up the matter during plenary on Tuesday, following heated deliberations.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adebowale Ogundoyin, ruled that the committee must investigate the allegation and submit its findings within one week.

The development comes amid reports that Shittu has been locked in a prolonged confrontation with his colleagues, most of whom belong to the ruling PDP.

The APC lawmaker had, in 2024, stirred controversy when he accused the Assembly of controversially approving a loan request for Governor Seyi Makinde.

Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, Adedoyin revealed that Shittu accused him of collecting a bribe from a local government chairman in the state.

He described the allegation as false and damaging, urging the House to take decisive action to protect its integrity.

“In that speech, I was falsely accused of offering and receiving bribes from the Chairman of Saki West Local Government to influence or alter the course of an investigation into allegations against him,” Adedoyin stated.

In his response, Speaker Ogundoyin cautioned lawmakers against making unsubstantiated allegations that could undermine the credibility of the Assembly.

He subsequently directed the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges to conduct a thorough investigation into the claim and report back within one week, as political tensions continue to simmer within the chamber.
