Funke Akindele has once again rewritten Nollywood history, as her latest film, Behind The Scenes, bulldozed past the ₦2 billion mark to emerge as the highest-grossing Nigerian movie of 2025 in just one month.
Distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, the blockbuster didn’t just open strong — it obliterated expectations, smashing five opening-weekend records, including a staggering ₦129.5 million single-day haul on Boxing Day.
Reacting to the milestone, the distributor declared that Behind The Scenes had not only crossed ₦2 billion but shattered long-standing industry ceilings, making it the first Nollywood film to achieve the feat across Africa, the UK, and Ireland.
The achievement further crowns Akindele as the first filmmaker to dominate the African box office for three consecutive years, reinforcing her status as West Africa’s most commercially successful filmmaker of all time.
With this latest triumph, Akindele now boasts three separate films that have each grossed over ₦1 billion, a record no other Nigerian filmmaker has matched.
Industry watchers attribute the film’s runaway success to strategic advanced screenings, a star-studded cast, and a storyline that struck a chord with audiences navigating family expectations and social pressure.
Performances from Scarlet Gomez, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, and Uche Montana helped elevate the film’s emotional appeal and box-office momentum.
Overflowing with gratitude, Akindele credited fans for the historic run, describing their loyalty as the backbone of her ever-growing entertainment empire.
