Algeria have escalated their AFCON heartbreak by formally petitioning CAF and FIFA over what they claim were controversial refereeing decisions in their quarter-final defeat to Nigeria.

The Algerian Football Federation confirmed the move on Monday, revealing it had demanded a full investigation into the officiating of the match.

According to the FA, the decisions taken during the encounter triggered outrage among players and supporters and cast doubt over refereeing standards.

In a strongly worded statement, the federation warned that the officiating undermined African football’s credibility on the global stage.

The complaint followed Algeria’s 2-0 loss to Nigeria, a result that abruptly ended their AFCON 2025 campaign.

Goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams propelled the Super Eagles into the semi-finals.

Tempers spilled over after the final whistle, with Algerian players angrily confronting match officials.

Footage circulating online showed heated exchanges and brief security concerns as fans attempted to encroach onto the pitch.

CAF has since confirmed it has launched its own investigation into the post-match chaos.

The governing body said reports and video evidence had been reviewed, with the case now handed to its Disciplinary Board.

Despite the controversy, the Algerian FA urged calm, asking fans to continue supporting the team during its rebuilding phase.

The federation stressed that lessons from AFCON 2025 would shape preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
