Abeokuta — A woman, Edith Taiwo, has reportedly died after being attacked by a mob in connection with an incident involving two women at a nightclub in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in October 2022.

According to sources, Oluwarantin Omolola Salako and Esther Biye were detained for two days by security guards at a strippers’ nightclub while attending a birthday party.

Eyewitnesses said the women were allegedly caught in an amorous act in the restroom, and photographs of the incident later circulated widely on social media.

The viral images reportedly exposed family members to threats, prompting angry youths to search for Salako and Biye, who were said to be in hiding.

In the course of the search, the mob reportedly stormed Taiwo’s home, accusing her of hiding her sister. She was allegedly assaulted during the attack and rushed to a hospital, where she reportedly died days later.

The Ogun State Police Command has not yet confirmed arrests or released an official statement on the attack.
Human rights groups condemned the incident, describing it as a “dangerous escalation of mob action and social media-fuelled harassment,” and called on authorities to ensure justice for Taiwo’s death.

Residents have urged calm and warned against taking the law into their hands, stressing that mob action can have fatal consequences.
