Super Eagles of Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has won the 2025 Gentlemen Quarterly Sportsman of the Year award in Turkey following his blazing form at Galatasaray.

Victor Osimhen, who has become a firm favourite among Galatasaray fans, received the award on Wednesday night at a black-tie ceremony in Istanbul. The annual event is organised by GQ Magazine’s Turkish edition and celebrates standout figures in sport, film, music, and other creative fields.

Osimhen’s recognition follows an extraordinary debut season in Turkey. The 26-year-old hit 37 goals and supplied seven assists in 41 matches, driving Galatasaray to the Super Lig and Turkish Cup titles. His impact was so profound that the club shattered the Turkish transfer record by triggering a €75 million deal to sign him permanently from Napoli.

Although injuries have slowed him at times this campaign, he has still managed 11 goals in 14 appearances across all competitions.

Osimhen’s influence on Nigeria has also remained significant. After missing the opening rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, he returned to score six goals in five games, helping push the Super Eagles into the play-offs.

He added two more strikes against Gabon in the semi-final, though an untimely injury ruled him out of the decisive clash with DR Congo, where Nigeria fell on penalties.

Osimhen is expected to lead the line when Nigeria heads to Morocco for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which runs from 21 December to 18 January 2026, as the team chases a fourth continental crown.

During his acceptance speech, he thanked the organisers, his club, and supporters for their unwavering backing. “I want to say a big thank you to GQ. Can’t forget my Galatasaray family. This means so much to my family and me. I appreciate everyone who has supported me up to this hour,” he said.

“I will continue to do my best for my family, for Galatasaray, for the fans all over the world.”

Apart from Osimhen, 10 other personalities received awards on the night. Actor Aras Aydın was named International Achiever of the Year, while actress Sinem Ünsal received the Woman of the Year award. British-Turkish singer-songwriter Edis was honoured as Music Person of the Year, and Bahtiyar Büyükduman picked up the Chef of the Year award.
