Super Falcons slip to 37th in FIFA Women’s rankings

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have fallen one place to 37th in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking, ending a six-ranking run in 36th position.

Despite the drop, the nine-time African champions continue to hold the top spot on the continent.

The ranking shift comes after a quiet international window for the Super Falcons. The Super Falcons only played their WAFCON 2026 qualifiers against the Benin Republic, winning 2-0 away and drawing 1-1 at home in Abeokuta. While the results secured their place at the next Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, they were not enough to boost Nigeria’s global standing.

Meanwhile, Ghana, which finished third at the 2024 WAFCON after beating South Africa on penalties, climbed five places to 62nd globally following a narrow 2-0 loss to England in a friendly.

South Africa and Morocco also strengthened their rankings, with the Bayana Bayana defeating Morocco 2-0, while Morocco had drawn 1-1 with Zimbabwe. Zambia engaged in two friendlies, drawing 1-1 with Malawi before beating Zimbabwe 3-1.

With Nigeria inactive, the gap between them and Africa’s chasing pack has narrowed. The continent’s top five now reads: Nigeria (37th), South Africa (55th), Ghana (62nd), Zambia (64th), and Morocco (66th).

On the global stage, Spain retains the number-one spot, followed by the United States, Germany, England, and Sweden. Brazil has risen to sixth, France slipped to seventh, while Japan, DPR Korea, and Canada complete the top ten.
