As Lagos gears up for its annual festive season, stakeholders have emphasised the need for world-class standards across tourism, hospitality, and entertainment sectors. The goal is to ensure visitors, returning residents, and locals enjoy a safe and memorable “Detty December.”
At a one-day stakeholder summit hosted by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, themed “Unlocking the Potential and Opportunities of Lagos Tourism: Collaboration and Partnership for a Greater Lagos”, industry players and government agencies outlined strategies to transform seasonal tourism into a year-round economic driver.
The event attracted high-profile attendees, including government officials, policymakers, entertainment industry stakeholders, and private sector representatives, fostering an environment for dialogue and collaboration.
During the summit, NAFDAC and NDLEA issued an advisory urging restaurants, bars, and tourists to remain vigilant against counterfeit drinks. “The yuletide season attracts large crowds, and it is essential that all beverage vendors comply with safety regulations to protect consumers,” the agencies stressed.
Panel discussions focused on Lagos’ potential as Africa’s premier coastal destination. Speakers, including Commissioner for Waterfront Mr. Bayo Alebiosu and industry leaders, highlighted the importance of accessible and safe beach experiences, waterfront activities, and open recreational facilities for residents and visitors.
Industry stakeholders called for government supported infrastructure upgrades, including improved access routes, shoreline protection, and modernized jetties. They stressed that public-private partnerships are key to sustainable tourism growth in Lagos.
Traffic management and waterway safety were central to the discussions. Lagos State Transportation and Waterways authorities detailed plans to handle the festive surge, including coordinated boat schedules, real-time monitoring systems, and enhanced security measures along major waterways.
Environmental considerations were also addressed. The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency reminded entertainment venues to adhere to noise and quality-of-life regulations, ensuring that residential areas are protected while maintaining vibrant holiday activities.
Stakeholders agreed that strict compliance with safety and service standards from secure roads and waterways to certified hospitality services and safe beverages is crucial for creating a world-class tourist experience.
The summit concluded with a shared commitment to elevate the festive experience in Lagos while laying the groundwork for long-term tourism growth beyond the December period, positioning the city as a top choice for regional and international visitors alike.
