The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has pledged to intensify collaboration with global and local partners to protect the nation’s food systems from mounting climate threats. The commitment came from NiMet’s Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike, at the close-out ceremony of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition’s (GAIN) Strengthening Nutrition in Priority Staples (SNIPS) project.

Speaking at the Abuja event, Anosike praised GAIN and development partners for what he called “a testament to what can be achieved when we unite expertise, resources and passion for a common goal.” The SNIPS initiative—implemented across Benue, Kaduna, Nasarawa and Oyo States—aimed to improve the nutritional value of staple crops while equipping farmers with practices that withstand increasingly erratic weather patterns.

Anosike warned that unpredictable rainfall, extended dry spells and other climate-induced pressures are placing Nigeria’s food production systems under growing strain. He said NiMet’s mandate to deliver accurate and timely weather information is critical for helping farmers decide when to plant, how to protect their crops and what strategies will reduce losses. “This supports higher yields and ensures that the staples reaching Nigerian households are both abundant and nutritious,” he said.

The DG also hailed SNIPS for integrating nutrition-sensitive farming with climate-smart methods—while ensuring strong engagement of women and young people. He noted that empowering these groups with training, leadership roles and livelihood opportunities is vital for building resilient food systems.

Calling for sustained collaboration among government agencies, private sector players and international partners, Anosike reaffirmed NiMet’s readiness to expand early-warning systems and farmer education programs nationwide.

“As we celebrate the achievements of SNIPS, let us also look to the future,” he said. “Your dedication is shaping a healthier, more food-secure Nigeria. NiMet stands ready to collaborate as we move forward together.”
