Portugal’s U17s finally touched global glory in Doha, snatching their first-ever World Cup title with a nervy 1-0 win over Austria, decided by a single, icy-cold moment from Anísio Cabral.
Fresh off a near-heart-attack penalty triumph over Brazil in the semis, the young Portuguese arrived at the Khalifa International Stadium looking like boys with unfinished business, immediately bossing possession and bullying Austria into retreat.
The breakthrough came in the 33rd minute when Duarte Cunha tore down the right flank and zipped in a wicked low cross. Anísio pounced like he’d been waiting his whole life, smashing the ball home. VAR tried to spoil the party, but the goal stood, and history was set in motion.
Austria staggered to halftime without creating a real threat, overwhelmed by Portugal’s rhythm and discipline.
The Austrians returned fighting, launching long-range efforts through Lucas Weinhandl and a strong Kenny Ndukwe header, but Portugal’s backline refused to blink.
As tension mounted, both managers raided their benches. Portugal’s Yoan Pereira, João Aragão, and Ricardo Neto came in to choke midfield spaces, while Austria’s fresh legs, Savic, Halmich, and others, chased shadows.
The final minutes were suffocating, especially when Halmich’s fierce shot was blocked at point-blank range. With five added minutes stretching into eternity, Portugal held firm, exploding into wild celebration when the whistle finally dropped.
