In a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s climate resilience, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has entered into a landmark partnership with Landmark University to deepen meteorological research and expand climate science education nationwide.
The agreement, sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), is expected to significantly enhance climate data collection, analysis, and the development of innovative solutions to support sustainable national growth.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Director-General/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, described the collaboration as a strategic boost to the agency’s mandate of improving data-driven forecasting and early warning systems. He noted that the partnership would advance research in critical areas such as drought monitoring, flood analysis, and agricultural planning—sectors he said are vital to national food security and climate adaptation efforts.
On his part, the Pro-Chancellor of Landmark University, Dr. Olumuyiwa Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to fostering an environment that encourages joint research to thrive. He disclosed that the university would actively engage in staff exchange programs, collaborative studies, and community outreach initiatives designed to translate scientific findings into practical solutions for farmers, policymakers, and vulnerable communities.
The MoU underscores the growing need for strong alliances between academic institutions and government agencies in the global fight against climate change. With NiMet’s technical capacity and Landmark University’s research-driven orientation, stakeholders say the partnership will establish a more robust framework for climate monitoring, education, and innovation—ultimately contributing to Nigeria’s sustainable development agenda.
