Governor Bassey Edet Otu of Cross River State has unveiled the 20th Anniversary Mascot for Calabar Carnival with the emergence of a new Carnival Calabar band, adding to the Street Party celebration bands, now becoming 8 competing bands.

Speaking during the occasion in Calabar, Governor Otu who was represented by his Deputy, RT.  HON.  Dr.  Peter Odey describes the event as a “symbolic and historic milestone that reinforces the cultural and tourism heritage of Cross River State” because the 20th anniversary Mascot is a replica of the Carnival Calabar journey, creating impact as one of Africa’s most celebrated cultures.

He also explained that the emergence of Calabar Carnival has become part of the Cross River State identity and the history that will remain with the state for generations yet unborn.

Dr. Odey also commended the initiative for the emergence of a new Calabar Carnival Band on the support of the Diasporas, as a new Diaspora was designed to reconnect with Africans in Diasporas, but desiring to trace their ancestral origin, which is why the state government established the Diaspora Commission for meaningful progress.

On the sustainability of the Calabar Carnival, the Deputy Governor expressed gratitude that for two decades, the event has continued to function as a global cultural bridge which is exhibiting our creative potentials, unity, and tourism to the whole world.

Speaking earlier is the pioneer Chairman of the Calabar Carnival Commission, Mr. Gabe Onah, who describes the celebration as a tribute to the state’s enduring cultural identity, saying, ” This is our state, today, we are witnessing the Unveiling of another icon of our collective efforts,” which is now 20 years old.

He also used the opportunity to recall the recent homecoming of 92 brothers and sisters from the African Diaspora who visited the state on a reconciliation and heritage tour, an experience that inspired the creation of the Diaspora Band for them to also tell their unknown story through rhythm and artistic expression” as well.

On the expectation of the Diaspora Band, HON. Odey explained that the 2025 Calabar Carnival theme is: “Traces of Time”, the Diaspora Band will be expected to join the Carnival Calabar procession with their own Sub-theme that reflects shared history, collective memory, and the desire for cultural reconnection.
