Ekiti born tennis player crowned CHAMPION at 2024 Vemp Tennis Championship

Ekiti Born, Lagos-Based Tennis Player has been crowned the men’s singles champion at the 2024 VEMP National Open Tennis Championship.

He secured the title by defeating Lucky Danjuma 7-6, 6-2 in the finals held at Abuja’s Moshood Abiola National Stadium on Saturday.

Adeleye demonstrated dominance throughout the tournament, narrowly winning a competitive first set before comfortably closing out the match in the second. His journey to the championship included a remarkable comeback in the semifinals against Canice Abua (2-6, 7-5, 6-1) and a decisive quarterfinal victory over Mubarak Ganiyu (6-2, 6-1). Earlier rounds saw him defeat Basit Ajao and Joseph Jimoh in straight sets.

Danjuma, who put up a strong fight to reach the final, overcame Uche Oparaji 7-6(5), 6-2 in the semifinals after earlier victories against Mevi Irimiya, Oche Adehi, and Paul Egena in the group stages.

In his post-match remarks, Adeleye expressed appreciation for the win, emphasizing that the achievement held greater significance than financial rewards.

“This victory is about proving my potential. When you stay committed to your game, success follows,” he stated. He also commended Nigeria Tennis Federation President Ifedayo Akindoju for organizing the event and acknowledged Danjuma’s sportsmanship, describing him as “supportive and encouraging, even during challenging moments.”

Adeleye first gained recognition as a rising tennis talent during his time at All Souls Anglican Grammar School in Ado Ekiti, where he proactively participated in local and interstate competitions.

The VEMP National Open Tennis Championship, organized by the Nigeria Tennis Federation and sponsored by its president, Ifedayo Akindoju, featured 192 competitors across men’s and women’s singles and doubles categories.
