In a bold move aimed at addressing the root causes of youth restrictiveness, piracy, and oil-related unrest in Akwa Ibom State, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on citizens to embrace national cohesion as a critical pathway to unity and sustainable development.
Speaking at the official flag-off of the state-level campaign for national cohesion held in Ukam, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area on Tuesday, the State Director of NOA, Mr. Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, urged Akwa Ibomites to reject social vices such as kidnapping, oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism, and other disruptive behaviors.
“These actions do not only endanger our communities but threaten the very fabric of our nation’s progress,” Mkpoutom said, addressing a cross-section of traditional rulers, youth leaders, women’s groups, and the media. “National cohesion is key to fostering peace and creating an environment conducive for development.”
He emphasized that Akwa Ibom’s cultural diversity, natural resources, and energetic population are assets that should be harnessed to promote unity and a shared national identity.
“Unity in diversity is not just a slogan,it is a call to action. By embracing our unique identities and working together, we can build a nation anchored in shared prosperity and lasting peace,” he added.
Mkpoutom further stressed that in a country as diverse as Nigeria, national cohesion is essential for building mutual respect and social harmony. According to him, fostering a collective identity that transcends ethnic, religious, and cultural boundaries will pave the way for economic development and attract foreign investment.
Also speaking at the event, Mrs. Felicia Udofia, Head of the Community Outreach and Development Department at NOA Akwa Ibom, highlighted the role of national cohesion in strengthening governance and community development.
“When citizens work hand-in-hand with government to solve local challenges, the result is improved governance and stronger communities,” Udofia noted. “We must embrace inclusivity, resilience, and unity to move our state and nation forward.”
The campaign, which aims to sensitize communities across the state, is part of a broader national initiative by NOA to promote patriotism, peaceful coexistence, and responsible citizenship.
