Edo charts new path to unity, wellness through Sport —Deputy Gov Idahosa

In a vibrant display of unity and purpose, Edo State has pledged to harness the transformative power of sports to bridge ethnic divides, promote healthy living, and deepen communal ties. This commitment was made by the state’s Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, during the 2024 Olympic Day celebration held in Benin City.
Speaking during the event, which attracted athletes, government officials, and sports enthusiasts, Idahosa emphasized that the Governor Monday Okpebholo-led administration sees sports as more than a competitive activity, but as a tool for social harmony, personal development, and economic empowerment.
“Sports is not just about winning medals; it strengthens the mind, fuels ambition, and builds bridges across cultures and backgrounds,” Idahosa stated. “This is why our government will continue to invest in sport as a unifier and as a platform for a healthier, more cohesive Edo.”
The celebration, themed “Let’s Move Together for Health and Community,” marked the global Olympic Day and featured a community-wide run from major streets of Benin City to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. Olympic Day commemorates the founding of the modern Olympic Movement in 1894 and promotes the core Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.
Highlighting the importance of consistent fitness, the Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Mr. Desmond Enabulele, proposed the institution of a monthly “Governor’s Fitness Day” to be held every third Saturday — as a legacy initiative inspired by the Olympic Day spirit.
“The idea is to encourage inclusivity and a culture of fitness in our communities, regardless of age, background, or ethnicity,” Enabulele explained. “It’s not just about running — it’s about building a stronger, united, and healthier society.”
The event featured celebrated sports icons including 2016 Olympic swimmer Rachael Tonjor and Isaac Ikhuoria, Nigeria’s 1972 Olympic bronze medalist in boxing. Their presence, alongside a diverse crowd of citizens, underscored the unifying force of sport.
The celebration concluded with renewed calls for more public-private partnerships in sports development as a catalyst for youth engagement, national pride, and community bonding.
