FG repatriates over 2,000 stranded Nigerians from Libya, Niger, Sudan

The Federal Government, with support from the International Organisation for Migration, has facilitated the return of over 2,000 Nigerians stranded in Niger Republic, Libya, and Sudan between January and April 2025.

Data from key agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), showed that the majority of the evacuees came from Niger and Libya.

A detailed breakdown reveals that 750 Nigerians were repatriated from Niger, 1,303 from Libya, and 140 from Sudan within the four-month period.

Specifically, 542 returnees arrived from Niger and Libya in January, 664 in February, and 640 in March from the three countries. In April alone, 347 Nigerians were airlifted from Libya.

These figures do not include the recent rescue and return of 231 Nigerians who had been trafficked to Ghana.

In a recent advisory, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs—through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa—urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to be cautious about deceptive job offers that claim to provide opportunities abroad.

The government emphasized the need to verify any foreign employment claims through proper official channels to avoid falling prey to human traffickers or exploitation.
