Alaafin clarifies stance on movement restrictions during traditional rites

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, has addressed concerns surrounding the reported curfew during the ongoing 21-day traditional rites, known as Oro Ipebi, in Oyo town.

In a statement issued by his Chief of Staff, Rotimi Osuntola, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, the monarch clarified that the wording in the initial announcement was not meant to offend or discriminate against any religious group. He emphasized that the directive should not be interpreted as a strict curfew but rather as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety during the rites.

“The Office of the Chief of Staff to the Alaafin of Oyo acknowledges the concerns raised by some residents regarding movement restrictions during specific hours, as previously announced in connection with the ongoing Oro Ipebi rites, which mark Oba Owoade’s ascension to the throne,” the statement read.

Osuntola explained that terms such as ‘curfew,’ ‘arrest,’ and ‘detention,’ used in the earlier statement, were not meant in a punitive sense but rather reflected traditional customs associated with the Oro rites. He reassured the public that there was no intent to interfere with religious observances such as Ramadan and Lent.

“These words were used in the customary context of the Oro tradition, not as coercive measures. The intent was simply to advise residents to be mindful of their movements while the rites are ongoing,” he stated.

The statement further clarified that the directive on curfew and possible arrests should be disregarded. Osuntola reaffirmed that Oba Owoade, a practising Muslim, respects constitutional rights and freedoms and would not impose measures that infringe on them.

“As a peace-loving leader, His Imperial Majesty seeks harmony among his people. The earlier announcement was only intended to ensure safety during the rites,” he added.

While residents were advised to exercise caution in areas where the Oro rites are taking place, the monarch reassured them that they could continue their daily activities without fear of arrest or harassment.
