NOA warns citizens against dangers of fuel scooping following tanker accidents

By Princess Don, Uyo.

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has issued a strong warning to citizens about the dangers of fuel scooping, particularly in light of the rising incidents of petrol tanker accidents across Akwa Ibom State.

In a statement made available to Standard-Times on Monday by Mr. Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, the State Director of NOA, urged Chief Orientation and Mobilization Officers (COMOs) in the 31 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state to ramp up public awareness efforts on the severe risks associated with the practice.

Speaking, Mr. Mkpoutom noted that the increasing number of tanker accidents has raised alarm among both government officials and concerned citizens. He outlined several immediate health risks of scooping fuel from a fallen tanker, including skin burns, respiratory problems, dizziness, headaches, and even unconsciousness.

However, he mentioned the most pressing danger as the potential for devastating fire explosions. “Petroleum products are highly flammable, and even the smallest spark can trigger catastrophic fires, endangering not only those involved in the fuel scooping but also emergency responders and nearby communities.” He added

Mr. Mkpoutom stressed that while individuals may be tempted to scoop fuel during moments of desperation, the risks far outweigh any perceived benefit.

He urged citizens to consider the long-term consequences of such actions, which can cause irreversible harm to both personal safety and the environment.

He also reassured the public that the NOA will continue its efforts to promote public safety, with a focus on encouraging responsible behavior.
