Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has emphasized the entertainment industry’s potential to positively engage the youth and serve as a significant source of revenue for Nigeria.
Governor Abiodun made this remark while receiving Paris-born artist and songwriter Bukola Elemide, popularly known as Asa, during her courtesy visit to his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. The governor christened Asa as “Omobowale,” a name reflecting her roots, and praised her as a pride of Ogun State.
Highlighting Asa’s global success and impact, the governor described her as a force to be reckoned with, alongside other prominent Ogun State indigenes who have achieved remarkable feats both locally and internationally.
“Ogun State indigenes are versatile, cerebral, and a rare breed who have made our nation proud,” Governor Abiodun stated. “We are blessed with immense talent and creativity, evident in our people’s achievements across various fields.”
The governor applauded Asa’s ability to effortlessly captivate global audiences with her music, which he noted appeals universally due to its quality and depth. He added that her success underscores the state’s rich talent pool.
As part of his administration’s efforts to harness the entertainment industry’s potential, Governor Abiodun announced plans to establish an entertainment village aimed at discovering and nurturing talent. He also lauded Asa’s humility and authenticity, which he said have endeared her to many.
Furthermore, the governor discussed his administration’s initiatives to revive Ogun State’s cultural heritage, particularly through the Adire fabric, which will soon be incorporated into school uniforms to promote local culture and create job opportunities.
He acknowledged Asa’s contributions to promoting African heritage and Yoruba culture through her deeply philosophical songs. “Your surname, Elemide, is unique to Ogun State, symbolizing a significant identity and pedigree. We are immensely proud of you,” he remarked.
Recalling their earlier encounter in Paris, where Asa performed at an event attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Abiodun expressed his pride as President Macron gave her a standing ovation.
In response, Asa, who hails from the Itoko area of Abeokuta, expressed her pride in her Ogun State heritage and pledged to maintain a close connection with her roots. She assured me that her visits to the state would become more frequent.
