ATPN Trustee Chairman hails renaming of University of Abuja after Gen Yakubu Gowon

Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN), Kabir M. Malan has commended the renaming of the University of Abuja after former Military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon. 

Malan described this gesture as a well-deserved tribute to Gowon’s remarkable legacy of selfless service, integrity, and patriotism, emphasizing that the renaming serves as a poignant reminder of Gowon’s tireless efforts to build a united and prosperous Nigeria, inspiring current and future leaders to emulate his exemplary values.

In a congratulatory message to Gen. Gowon, endorsed by Malan, dated December 17, 2024, the Board Chairman of the oldest multi-sectorial tourism trade body in Nigeria noted: “Your tireless efforts to promote unity and progress in our great nation have earned you a well-deserved recognition. 

“As a former Head of State and champion of national cohesion, your leadership and contributions to Nigeria’s development continue to inspire generations of Nigerians. We’re deeply grateful for your presence at our recent Annual General Meeting, which served as a powerful reminder of your commitment to initiatives that foster national development and unity.

“Please accept our heartfelt congratulations on this historic recognition, marking a significant milestone in your illustrious career. We wish you continued health, strength, and fulfillment as you remain a shining beacon of hope and unity for our nation,” the statement read in part.

Recall that Gen. Gowon’s famous “no victor, no vanquished” speech after the Nigerian Civil War was a significant step towards healing the nation’s wounds and promoting reconciliation. Gowon established the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in 1973, which aimed to promote national unity and development by deploying young graduates to work in different parts of the country.

Gowon played a key role in promoting Nigeria’s international relations, including the country’s membership in the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Overall, Gen. Yakubu Gowon’s legacies in Nigeria are a testament to his commitment to national unity, economic development, and international cooperation.

During his administration, Gowon oversaw the construction of several key infrastructure projects, including the Kainji Dam, the Niger Bridge, and the expansion of the country’s road network.
