EFCC arrests TikToker over fake kidnap story

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has taken a TikTok user into custody after he shared a video claiming that some of its officers were kidnapped in Kwara State.

The arrest was confirmed on Wednesday in a statement issued by the commission’s spokesperson, Suleiman Haruna.

The suspect, Udoma David Ekeh, who uses the TikTok handle @davysoft231, had posted a video in December 2025 alleging that operatives from the Ilorin office were attacked and taken by bandits during an operation in Kwara State.

According to the agency, the video also suggested that the kidnappers demanded money from the commission before the officers were released and painted a picture that the situation was beyond the agency’s control.

After reviewing the claims, the commission said there was no truth in the story and described the content as false and capable of causing panic among the public.

It added that the video gave a wrong impression about its work, especially its ongoing efforts against internet fraud.

Findings also showed that the video gained wide attention on TikTok, attracting thousands of views, likes, and comments, which further spread the information to many users.

The commission stated that its investigation into the matter led to Ekeh’s arrest.

During the process, it was also discovered that he had allegedly been involved in an online scam where he posed as a foreigner named Garg Carta on Facebook to deceive people.

The agency said the suspect will be charged to court after investigations are completed.
