Tragedy struck in Ibadan in the early hours of Tuesday after a truck reportedly suffered brake failure and ploughed into vehicles, traders, and pedestrians, leaving two people dead and several others injured.
The accident occurred at the busy Beere Roundabout, a known commercial hub, where early morning activities were already underway before the fatal incident.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the out-of-control truck rammed into multiple targets, including roadside traders and moving vehicles, triggering chaos and panic in the area.
Sources confirmed that a man and a woman lost their lives on the spot, while other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash.
Emergency responders quickly moved in to evacuate the injured, who were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, who disclosed that the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at a morgue.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck, identified as a Mack vehicle belonging to Bovas Oil, lost control while descending from the Beere axis before crashing along the Oje Market corridor.
The impact reportedly damaged five tricycles and a Toyota Camry, compounding the scale of destruction caused by the accident.
Authorities also confirmed that the driver of the truck fled the scene and is currently at large, prompting a manhunt by law enforcement agencies.
Police say investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
