Nigerian music star Peter Okoye has revealed that he once came close to becoming a professional footballer before fame with P-Square changed the course of his life.
Okoye shared the revelation in a recent Instagram post where he reflected on his early days as a young footballer training at the renowned Pepsi Football Academy.
According to the singer, his football career was already gaining traction at the time, as he received an opportunity to play professionally for Plateau United F.C. while still developing at the academy in Jos.
He explained that during that period he was juggling both passions, football and music, while trying to determine which path would define his future.
Okoye also posted a throwback video featuring former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel, noting that they were once teammates during their junior football days.
Despite the chance to play in Nigeria’s top-flight league, Okoye said his ultimate ambition was to pursue a professional career in Europe.
However, circumstances eventually led him away from football and toward music, where he went on to achieve global success.
Reflecting on the journey, the singer described his career path as destiny, encouraging young people to stay committed to their dreams regardless of how life unfolds.
“Never give up! Yes, I used to play football and chase music at the same time. I was even offered the chance to play for Plateau United from Pepsi Academy back then in Jos. But my dream was always to play in Europe,” he wrote.
“Somehow, destiny chose the mic instead. Today, I’m an established and successful artiste/musician. That’s nothing but grace.”
