The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the occurrence of a serious lone-vehicle accident involving a Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) that overturned multiple times at the NYSC Bus Stop along the LASU–Isheri Expressway, as mother and her son survived the crash.
The incident was disclosed in a press statement issued on LASTMA’s official X account by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to the statement, the Lexus Jeep with registration number KJA 39 JT, which was travelling from Isheri inward Igando, suddenly lost control due to brake failure, causing the vehicle to somersault three times before coming to a stop amid heavy peak-hour traffic along the corridor.
LASTMA operatives stationed in the area reportedly responded swiftly and carried out a coordinated rescue operation.
The mother and her son were successfully extricated from the severely damaged vehicle with visible bruises and mild trauma, narrowly escaping what could have been a fatal incident.
Security support was provided by officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Igando Division, who maintained crowd control and secured the scene during the rescue and evacuation process.
Family members of the victims arrived shortly after being notified and transported them to a medical facility for further evaluation and treatment.
To prevent secondary accidents and ease traffic congestion along the busy Lagos State University corridor, LASTMA officials coordinated the evacuation of the damaged vehicle with support from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
The vehicle was subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation and necessary administrative procedures.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed relief that no lives were lost. He wished the victims a speedy recovery and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to rapid emergency response, proactive traffic management, and sustained road safety enforcement.
Bakare-Oki also urged motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and conduct routine mechanical checks, particularly on critical safety components such as braking systems, before embarking on any journey.
He warned that excessive speed, especially when combined with mechanical faults, remains a major cause of severe road accidents on major expressways.
