Lagos seals estates over non-compliance with layout plan approvals

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, has intensified enforcement against estates operating without approved layout plans and building permits, sealing several properties in the Lekki axis as part of its compliance drive.

The development was disclosed in a press release issued to journalists by the Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Kehinde Akinsanya.

The enforcement exercise, led by the Director of Development Matters, Tpl. Hakeem Animashaun, forms part of the government’s broader effort to promote orderly urban development, protect infrastructure and ensure sustainable growth, particularly in rapidly developing areas such as Lekki-Ajah.

The action targeted estates that had previously been cautioned for failing to obtain the necessary approvals.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance stance on unauthorised developments. He emphasised that developers are required to secure layout approvals and building permits before commencing construction.

According to him, the Office of Physical Planning is statutorily mandated to ensure that all physical developments across the state conform to approved planning standards and regulations.

“We will continue to enforce compliance across the state. Developers must prioritise obtaining layout approvals and building permits to avoid sealing and other penalties,” Olumide said.

He added that similar enforcement operations would be extended to other parts of the state to strengthen compliance and uphold planning standards.

Estates visited during the operation include Victoria Nest, Vistaview Estate, Empire Homes, JadeView Estate, BlessedView Homes and Micrian Villa Estate, among others.

The state government has repeatedly warned developers against disregarding planning regulations, stressing that compliance is essential to prevent infrastructural strain and environmental challenges associated with unregulated expansion.
