Cristiano Ronaldo has shut down rumours of a training boycott after returning to Al-Nassr’s sessions in Riyadh, despite mounting tension behind the scenes.
Contrary to widespread claims in Saudi media that the Portuguese superstar had gone on strike following a breakdown in relations with the club, Portuguese outlet Record reports that Ronaldo never left the capital and has not missed a single scheduled training session. He is expected to take full part in Wednesday’s session under new manager Jorge Jesus.
While his professionalism on the pitch remains unquestioned, Ronaldo is said to be increasingly frustrated with Al-Nassr’s inactivity during the January transfer window and the controversy surrounding Karim Benzema’s attempted move from Al-Ittihad to Al-Hilal.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner reportedly sees the episode as further proof of an uneven power structure in the Saudi Pro League, believing Al-Hilal enjoy preferential backing while Al-Nassr struggle to strengthen their squad. Although Benzema’s move was eventually blocked, the lack of reinforcements has only deepened Ronaldo’s dissatisfaction.
Speculation about an emotional return to Portugal has been dismissed, with Record revealing that Ronaldo is instead weighing up a potential switch to Major League Soccer or one final challenge in Europe.
Despite turning 41 this week, Ronaldo remains convinced he can still compete at the highest level. For now, Al-Nassr continue to lean heavily on their captain, who has delivered 18 goals and three assists in 22 appearances this season, even as uncertainty clouds his future beyond the current campaign.
