A violent attack by youths of the Egun community in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area has left Mr. Edokpolor Igueben severely injured and his family displaced, amid growing concerns over the enforcement of harmful traditional practices in Edo State.
The incident reportedly occurred around 11:00 p.m. on January 13, 2026, after Mr. Igueben refused to allow his daughter to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM), a practice upheld by members of Egun community and other part of Edo state.
During the attack, Mr. Igueben allegedly lost an arm, and his family home was set ablaze and completely destroyed.
The community youth leader, Stanley Imasuen, described by sources as an alleged cultist, and other members of the community were invited for questioning at the 3rd East Circular Road Police Division on January 16. They were later released pending the conclusion of investigations.
The whereabouts of Mr. Igueben’s family remain unknown, with unconfirmed reports suggesting they have gone into hiding.
Mr. Igueben is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital outside the state.
Similar attacks have reportedly occurred in Egun community and elsewhere in Edo State, often targeting families resisting certain traditional practices.
Local observers attribute the trend to unemployment, lack of community engagement, and limited education, which may fuel aggressive enforcement by youths. Families affected often turn to traditional rulers, courts, or the police, but protection is not always guaranteed while cases are being resolved.
Efforts to obtain official comments from the Edo State Government are ongoing. As of press time, our correspondent had reached out to the government’s spokesperson and is awaiting a response.
