Toyin Abraham has fired a loud warning shot across Nollywood’s bow, as her debut directorial effort, Oversabi Aunty, stormed cinemas with a stunning ₦99.8 million opening weekend haul.
The film now stands as Nollywood’s second-highest opening release of 2025, instantly silencing doubts about Abraham’s transition from actress to director.
Oversabi Aunty follows the chaotic journey of a well-meaning but meddlesome aunty whose attempts to fix everyone’s problems spiral into comedy, chaos and emotional revelations.
Advance screenings on December 18 ignited strong word-of-mouth, setting the stage for its nationwide release on December 19.
The film boasts a star-studded lineup including Mike Ezuruonye, Efe Irele and Enioluwa Adeoluwa.
Reacting to the numbers, Abraham took to social media, writing: “Opening weekend for Oversabi Aunty —GOD DID! You all did this, and I’m beyond grateful.
“Thank you to everyone who has seen and is still going to see Oversabi Aunty. This is my first big-screen directorial debut, and I don’t take it for granted.”
