Team Nigeria’s medal surge continued on Wednesday night at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, where the nation’s competitors powered to two more gold medals, one in wrestling and the other in the women’s 4x100m relay.
The latest victories were confirmed in a statement released Thursday by Kola Daniel, Special Adviser to National Sports Commission (NSC) Director-General Bukola Olapade, who applauded Nigeria’s growing presence at the Games.
In a dominant 53kg freestyle wrestling final, Christiana Ogunsanya outclassed Uzbekistan’s Shokhida Akhmedova with an emphatic 11–1 victory to claim Nigeria’s first gold of the night.
Moments later, Nigeria’s youthful and energetic quartet of Bada Toyin, Ezechukwu Miracle, Omokwe Maria, and Nweke Cynthia produced a blistering performance to win the women’s 4x100m relay in 44.27 seconds, beating Bahrain and Gambia to silver and bronze, respectively.
Nigeria’s medal haul did not end there. The contingent added two more silvers and three bronzes across track and field events. Kure Adams and Badmus Atanda delivered bronze medals in the men’s javelin and 400m, while Patience George took silver in the women’s 400m. The men’s 4x100m team also secured bronze after a spirited run.
In the wrestling arena, Miesinnei Genesis battled hard but settled for silver in the women’s 50kg freestyle final after a 5–1 loss to Uzbekistan’s Aktenge Keunimjaeva.
Olopade praised the athletes for their focus and resilience, assuring them that President Bola Tinubu and the NSC remain committed to giving Nigerian sports the international exposure needed to stay competitive on the world stage.
Nigeria’s overall tally now stands at eight gold, 10 silver, and seven bronze medals, with hopes of further podium finishes in para-athletics and para-powerlifting as the Games continue.
