Controversial entertainer Terry G has taken a swipe at Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia for dismissing claims that Christians in the state are facing targeted attacks. The singer accused the governor of downplaying the suffering of residents affected by recurring violence.

Governor Alia, speaking at a forum organised by the National Human Rights Commission in Abuja, had debunked international reports alleging religious genocide in Benue, insisting that no such persecution exists anywhere in the state.

While acknowledging persistent security challenges, the governor maintained that the situation does not meet the definition of genocide and criticised foreign agencies pushing to classify Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.”

But Terry G, himself a Benue indigene, rejected the governor’s position. In an Instagram post, he questioned why a cleric-turned-governor would “lie” about the crisis that has displaced thousands.

“Reverend, why una dey lie?” he wrote. “Benue Christians are under attack. Denying it won’t change the truth.”

He accused the state government of trying to suppress the voices of affected communities and ignoring reports of killings, displacement, and destruction of farmlands by armed groups.

Terry G’s comments have deepened online debate over the state’s security situation, with many residents echoing his frustration. Civil society groups have also urged the government to acknowledge the scale of the violence instead of dismissing it.

As reactions spread, pressure is mounting on Governor Alia to address concerns raised by citizens rather than focusing on international perceptions.
