The Bazar community in Yabo Local Government Area of Sokoto State has appealed for urgent help after bandits imposed a ₦15 million levy on them.
Residents said the bandits threatened to attack the community and destroy farm produce if the payment was not made. They are now calling on the state government and security agencies to intervene before the situation worsens.
According to a resident, Alhaji Dauda Umar, the community has suffered repeated attacks over the years, with the bandits familiar with the area’s terrain. He said seven people had been kidnapped, shops looted, and goods worth millions of naira stolen.
“We have reported the matter to the authorities, including the police, but we need more support to tackle this security challenge,” Umar said.
The residents also appealed to the Chairman of Yabo Local Government to help address the worsening insecurity.
The incident adds to the growing wave of violence across Sokoto State, where several communities have faced similar threats. In Sabon Birni Local Government Area, for instance, bandits reportedly imposed a ₦25 million fine on residents.
The persistent attacks have displaced many families, forcing some to flee to neighboring towns such as Gatawa and Turba.
The situation remains dire, with rising reports of violence, extortion, and kidnappings. Residents are urging the state government and security agencies to take decisive action to restore peace and protect affected communities.
