The member representing Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal constituency in the green chamber, Rt. Hon. Suleiman Abubakar Gummi has donated Cholera drugs worth N15million to his constituency due to Cholera outbreak that took over some parts of the area, calling on both state and Federal government including NGOs to intervene for the security of lives of the people.
In an open letter written by the Honorable member today and made available to journalists in Gusau, he outlined the affected areas in the constituency that are currently battling the scourge of the disease and the reason for urgent attention by government and other health partners.
In his words, Suleiman Gummi said, with due respect and urgency, I wish to draw the attention of Federal government, the Zamfara State Government and our esteemed international partners to the worsening cholera outbreak currently affecting Bukkuyum and Gummi Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Zamfara State.
The outbreak in Bukkuyum, with rising fatalities, presents a grave risk of further escalation if immediate interventions are not strengthened. The recent report from Nasarawa ward, with cases yet to be quantified, indicates the outbreak is still spreading. While MSF is already supporting in Gummi LGA, the scale of the crisis requires broader, coordinated support.
In Bukkuyum LGA, there are four wards and seven villages that are affected by the disease, from 16th to 26th August 158 patients were admitted, 64 discharged, 57 currently on admission, 1 dead in Bukkuyum and 6 dead in Zauma ward.
In Gummi LGA, there are two wards affected, 26 Cholera patients under admission and there is no fatality rate recorded so far.
Hon. Suleiman Gummi commended the effort of MSF whose timely intervention has cusion the effect of the disease in Gabtu community.
He called on Zamfara State Government to intensify its public health emergency response, including deploying rapid response teams, ensuring availability of cholera treatment centers, and coordinating WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) interventions in affected LGAs.
He also called on International NGOs (INGOs) and Development Partners to urgently provide technical, financial, and logistic support in the following areas:
Immediate supply of ORS, IV fluids, and essential drugs. Expansion of Cholera Treatment Centers (CTCs) in affected wards Safe water interventions including chlorination, water tankering, and distribution of purification tablets, community sensitization and hygiene promotion to curb spread as well as surveillance support to track, verify, and contend new cases.
This cholera outbreak in Bukkuyum and Gummi LGAs is a public health emergency that requires immediate, coordinated action. Delay in response will cost more lives, particularly among women and children in vulnerable rural communities.
While confirming the on-the-spot figure via phone call to the Local Government chairman of Bukkuyum Hon. Umar A. Faru said, 16 patients are being admitted as at morning of 26th August 2025.
Rt. Honourable Suleiman Abubakar Gummi, has been closely supportive. So far, within Bukkuyum alone, he has purchased Cholera drugs worth about N7million to assist in the Cholera outbreak. If it were not his assistance that we enjoyed in Bukkuyum since on the 16th August till now, there would have been more dead recorded.
The Executive Chairman of Gummi LGA, Alhaji Saidu kalla Gamu-Gummi gave an on the spot information concerning the Cholera situation as at today 26th August 2025.
He stated that, as of now the disease has subsided in Gummi local Government unlike in Bukkuyum local Government which the cholera outbreak is getting worse.
