Oyo Gov’t begins distribution of over 5 Million Mosquito Nets, warns against misuse

The Oyo State Government has flagged off the mass distribution of over five million insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) across the 33 local government areas of the state, in a move to combat the spread of malaria, particularly among vulnerable groups.

The official launch of the campaign took place at Idi-Ogungun Primary Health Care Centre, Agodi Gate, Ibadan North Local Government Area. Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the health of pregnant women and children under the age of five.

“These nets are not just commodities; they are life-saving tools. When used correctly and consistently, ITNs serve as an effective barrier against malaria, one of the deadliest diseases affecting our people,” the commissioner stated.

She cautioned residents against using the nets for purposes other than malaria prevention, citing reports of previous misuse for fishing, gardening, window covering, and even commercial displays.

“Let me be clear: anyone caught hoarding or selling these nets, or using them for anything other than malaria prevention, will face legal consequences,” she warned, adding that the nets were provided free of charge by the government and donor agencies to protect public health, not for personal gain.

Dr. Ajetunmobi also stressed the importance of nightly use of the nets, especially by mothers and pregnant women, noting that the current generation of ITNs is made of lightweight, breathable materials that do not retain heat when used in well-ventilated rooms.

She encouraged families to adopt the habit of tucking their children into the nets every night to reduce malaria-related illnesses, hospital visits, and fatalities.

To ensure the nets reach all households, the Commissioner revealed that mop-up activities would follow the main distribution phase. The distribution exercise, which began on August 1, will run through August 7, 2025, using fixed-point delivery sites across the state.

Electronic tracking systems have also been deployed to promote transparency and ensure full coverage.

The Oyo State Government, through its Ministry of Health and in partnership with development agencies, reaffirmed that the mosquito net distribution is part of an integrated approach to malaria control.

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, in a statement made available to journalists, urged residents to cooperate with officials and take full advantage of the exercise.
