The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has emphasized the importance of knowledge, trust, and courageous decision-making as critical elements of effective leadership capable of driving Nigeria’s national development agenda.
Tunji-Ojo made the remarks on Wednesday while receiving a delegation of the Legislative Mentorship Initiative (LMI) Alumni from the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies. The delegation, led by its President, Architect Abubakar Tijani Garba, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister’s office in Abuja.
While commending the group for its consistent focus on leadership development and capacity building, the Minister reiterated that effective leadership comes at a price, often paid through relentless self-development and a commitment to excellence.
“Leadership is not free; there are costs, and the greatest of these is the commitment to personal growth and knowledge acquisition,” he said. He urged young professionals to challenge the fear of failure and rejection, adding that these factors often hinder progress and innovation.
“Leadership is a position of trust, not just authority,” Tunji-Ojo stated. “People must believe in you, and that trust is what drives your effectiveness as a leader.”
He cited reforms under his administration, particularly the overhaul of Nigeria’s passport processing system, as an example of bold leadership in action. He noted that despite skepticism, he was determined to challenge outdated processes to deliver results.
“People are remembered not for being average but for being exceptional,” he added, charging the alumni to pursue excellence and disrupt the status quo in their respective fields.
In his earlier remarks, LMI Alumni President, Arch. Abubakar Tijani Garba, applauded the Minister for his youthful vigor, dynamic leadership style, and remarkable strides since assuming office. He highlighted the clearing of over 200,000 passport backlogs within three months as a notable achievement.
Garba also reaffirmed the group’s support for the Ministry’s initiatives, especially those focused on youth empowerment and national service. He disclosed that the LMI Alumni network is active across the country and has been instrumental in executing various developmental projects.
Among the initiatives mentioned were an upcoming Leadership Summit scheduled for December 2025—during which the Minister will be honored for his public service—as well as a tree-planting campaign planned for September to promote climate action and community development.
The alumni leader expressed interest in deeper collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, particularly in areas of youth mentorship and career opportunities within the public service. He revealed that 12 proposals aimed at supporting national career development for young Nigerians had been presented to the Ministry.
Additionally, Garba informed the Minister of a forthcoming book launch documenting the journey and impact of the Legislative Mentorship Initiative. He requested the Minister’s foreword and endorsement for the publication.
In response, Dr. Tunji-Ojo welcomed the proposals and expressed strong support for collaborative efforts that build competent, service-driven leaders for Nigeria’s future.
He assured the delegation of the Ministry’s commitment to youth development, mentorship, and active partnership with progressive groups such as the LMI Alumni, describing them as vital partners in national progress.
The Minister lauded the group’s dedication to capacity building and said he was impressed by their sustained investment in national development.
“The future of this country rests in the hands of passionate, visionary youth like you. The Ministry will continue to support initiatives that empower the next generation and build a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria,” he said.
The visit ended with the presentation of the group’s development proposals and mutual expressions of commitment to shared goals of leadership excellence and national transformation.
