Acting Provost lauds Gov Idris over sector reform

By: John Bassey.

The Acting Provost, College of Health Science and Technology, Jega, Hussaini Aliyu has commended His Excellency, Comrade Dr Nasir Idris, for reforming the educational sector of Kebbi State and meeting the basic needs of the four state-owned tertiary institutions.

He gave the commendation while interacting with Journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Friday.

Aliyu said the governor had increased the monthly cash allocation of the four state-owned tertiary educational institutions from N10.5 million to N40 million.

He recalled that before, the College of Health Science and Technology, Jega, used to receive N1.5 million as monthly cash allocation “but now the governor has raised it to N10 million.”

The gesture according to him, will go a long way in ameliorating some of the bottlenecks hindering the growth and development of the institutions.

He said, apart from the increase in the monthly cash allocation, the governor had also approved the release of about N36 million as intervention to regularise the 2023/2024 un-indexed 556 students of the Departments of Community Health, Environmental Health, and Health Education, as well as the promotion of the college.

Aliyu noted with satisfaction that the governor had also released about N60 million for the accreditation of seven courses by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), offered by the college.

“You see, so far the NBTE team has been in the college for two days, a resource visit/mock accreditation of courses,” he added.

The Acting Provost recalled that since the college was established in 1971, no single course had NBTE accreditation, “but the governor approved the funding for NBTE accreditation.”

Similarly, Aliyu identified water supply as a long-standing issue in the college, but with the intervention of the governor, the issue has now become a thing of the past.

“The governor’s magnanimity to the college is endless; all un-indexed cases of students have been settled, installation of solar street lights across the college premises, and equipping the Basic Science Laboratories with equipment.

“Others are: stocking of the library with current textbooks, prompt payments of salaries and other allowances to the staff of the college, among others,” he said.

The provost described His Excellency, Comrade Dr Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, as an intellectual governor, insisting that investment in the higher education sector was critical to creating and developing skills and expertise for teaching, research, innovation, and invention.

He equally thanked the Ministry for Higher Education and the Governing Council of the college, for their dedication and commitment towards the development of the college.
